Newark-on-Trent

Newark-on -Trent is a city in the east of England, now part of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire earlier. In 2001 it had 25,376 inhabitants, together with the closely intergrown neighboring Balderton 35 674.

History

The place was built on a spot where the Roman road Fosse Way touches the River Trent. He was first mentioned in 664, and in the Domesday Book as its citizens are called residents. In the 12th century the bishops of Lincoln were the Castle Newark Castle and build a bridge over the Trent. 1549 was the city from the hands of the bishop over in the crown. 1673 was Borough ( constituency) with two seats in the House of Commons. In the 19th century, agricultural machinery and sugar industries emerged.

Attractions

  • To the great marketplace are numerous old buildings, especially the Mary Magdalene church from the 14th century ( some parts older), one of the largest parish churches in England.
  • Newark Castle was destroyed after the siege of Newark in the English Civil War. King John I died in 1216 in the south tower of the castle.
