Newcastle West ( Irish: An Caisleán Thiar Nua ) is a city in County Limerick in the southwest of Ireland.

The place

Newcastle West is located in the southwest of County Limerick close to the counties Kerry and Cork to Limerick City and is the second largest city of the county. It lies on the River Arra, a tributary of the River Deel, and evolved from a 1184 built by the Knights Templar castle, the remains of which ( " ruins" ) are in a relatively good state of preservation. The population of the town was established in the 2006 Census 5,098 people. Not least because of its strategic location on a main road and close to famous tourist attractions, the city region has benefited from the economic boom in Ireland since the late 1980s.
