The Newell Highway is a highway through the center of the Australian state of New South Wales. It connects the Leichhardt Highway, the Barwon Highway and the Cunningham Highway Goondiwindi on the border to Queensland with the Goulburn Valley Highway at Tocumwal on the border with Victoria. The Newell Highway is 1050 km, the longest highway in New South Wales and extends about 400 km inland parallel to the coast. This makes it an important interstate road link that bypasses the densely populated coastal areas spacious.

Course

The Newell Highway got its start in Goondiwindi on the Macintyre River, a small town on the border between New South Wales and Queensland. He is regarded as a continuation of the Leichhardt Highway ( NA39 / A5) which leads from the north by Goondiwindi. Immediately after crossing the border branches in Boggabilla the Bruxner Highway ( R44 ) to the southeast from.

After about 130 km south of Newell Highway Moree reached the city, where it crosses the Gwydir Highway ( R38 ). Moree is the center of the cotton industry in northern New South Wales. Even Moree is famous for its thermal springs, which are said to have healing properties.

About 100 km further south on the Newell Highway is the town of Narrabri. There crosses the Kamilaroi Highway ( R37 ). In the immediate vicinity of Narrabri are the mount Kaputar National Park and the CSIRO Australia Telescope. This is a radio telescope consisting of six parabolic antennas, each 22 m in diameter.

A further 120 km towards the south-west of the Newell Highway reaches the small town of Coonabarabran. This is true of Port Macquarie on the east coast coming of Oxley Highway ( R34) on the Newell Highway. Both run the next 95 km along as far as Gilgandra. In Gilgandra the Castlereagh Highway ( R55 ) from the north meets forth on the two highways, the Oxley Highway branches off to the west and from the Newell Highway leading towards further south to Dubbo.

In Dubbo several highways meet. So the Mitchell Highway ( R32) crosses from southeast to northwest and the Golden Highway ( S84 ) hits coming from the east on the Newell Highway.

If you follow the Newell Highway further south, you reach 120 km, the city park. Parkes is located on the transcontinental railway line and is stopping point of the Indian Pacific. Also known is still the Parkes Observatory outside the city. This radio telescope was used by NASA during the Apollo missions as a base in the southern hemisphere. This role was also filmed in the movie The Dish.

Later in the southwest of Newell Highway performs Forbes, Marsden and West Wyalong. Between the two latter places the road from the Newell Highway and the Mid- Western Highway (R24 ) is used. The latter results from Bathurst to Hay. West Wyalong is mainly known as the site for the production of eucalyptus oil.

Narrandera is the nearest large town on the Newell Highway, about 140 km south-west of West Wyalong. In Narrandera the Sturt Highway ( N20) crosses in west-east direction. The city is known as the center of an agriculturally very fertile area, which was created by large-scale irrigation. Today, in addition to the traditional cultivation of grain and sheep farming and citrus fruits and wine can be grown successfully.

Other places in the course of the Newell Highway are Jerilderie and Finley, where the Riverina Highway ( R58 ) crosses. In Tocumwal the Newell Highway reaches the border with Victoria and therefore also its end. In Victoria the Newell Highway is continued in the Goulburn Valley Highway ( NA39 ), which, in conjunction with the Hume Highway ( N31 ​​) up to Melbourne.
