Newlyn [' nu ː lɪŋ ] ( Cornish: Lulynn [' ly ː lɪŋ ] ) is a village in the former Penwith District of Cornwall in England and belongs to the municipality of the neighboring Penzance. Economy

Since the 15th century almost exclusively adult sardines ( pilchards engl. ) were processed and shipped all over the world in Newlyn. Until the 30s the area lived from the sardine fishery, then remained the great swarms from before Cornwall coasts. The fishermen put themselves successfully on other fish species around so that the harbor is the main hub for British fishing today. Pilchard Works in Newlyn is the only factory in Cornwall, where the large sardines are still being processed.

Culture

At the site there is also the famous Newlyn Art Gallery, which was built in 1895 to showcase the works of artists from the Newlyn School, a group of artists of late Impressionism, including Walter Langley, Norman Garstin and Lamorna Birch, the end of the 19th century settled here in the area to operate open-air painting.
