Newmarket Saints
The Newmarket Saints were a Canadian ice hockey franchise in the American Hockey League from Newmarket, Ontario. The venue of the Saints was the Ray Twinney Complex.
History
In 1986, the Toronto Maple Leafs decided from the National Hockey League, their farm team, the St. Catharines Saints to Newmarket, Ontario to resettle, where, under the name Newmarket Saints was henceforth active in the AHL. The Newmarket Saints reached in its five years of existence only in a single season, the playoffs for the Calder Cup, where they failed with 1:4 victories in the 1988/89 season in the first round of the Adirondack Red Wings. In 1991, the Newmarket Saints were finally to St. John's, Newfoundland, resettled, where they were active from now on as St. John 's Maple Leafs of the AHL.
The gap left by the departure of the Saints in Newmarket, was then of the Newmarket Royals of the Ontario Hockey League (1991-1994) filled.
