Newport RFC

The Newport Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club that plays in the Welsh Premier Division. The home games are played at Rodney Parade stadium.

History

The Newport RFC was founded in 1874 and played four years of the first game between a Welsh and an English club when they met on Blackheath. 1880 belonged to the club of the founders of Welsh Rugby Union and introduced the first chairman of the association. Four players of the club belonged to the squad of the Welsh national team, as they took in 1881 to their first international against England. Newport's John Bevan was even the first Welsh captain in the history of rugby. The first attempt for the national team scored Tom Baker -Jones, also a Newport player.

At the beginning of the 20th century traveled numerous teams to Newport. South Africa bestowed the club in 1912 with a head of a springbok, their heraldic animal. Newport thanked with the first victory of a club team over the South Africans. In the 1950s, the club presented the first 7 -seater rugby team in Wales.

1957 Newport managed a victory over the Australian national team, followed by a win against New Zealand, so that the club has beaten all three sizes of the southern hemisphere. In 1969, she could repeat her success on the " Springboks ". In the 1990s, Newport had to make difficulties to the successful times. After the professionalization of the sport, the WRU decided to form regional teams in 2003, which should consist of the existing clubs. Thus, the Newport Gwent Dragons who play in the Celtic League has since emerged, with the Newport RFC since the 1990s in the Welsh Premier Division play.

From the 2009/10 season the club at the British and Irish Cup, will take part in a competition for second-rate clubs.
