Newton County (Arkansas)
The Newton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Jasper. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in northwest Arkansas, is located in the north about 50 miles from Missouri and has an area of 2,132 square kilometers, of which a square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
2000 2010
The Newton County was formed on December 14, 1842 from parts of Carroll County. It was named for Thomas W. Newton (1804-1853), a senator in Arkansas (1844-1848) and short-term members of the U.S. House of Representatives (1847 ).
The first school was founded in 1860 in Mount Judea. 1886 was added at the Western Grove Academy.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2010 lived in Newton County 8,330 people in 3,527 households. The population density was 3.9 people per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 96.1 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 1.1 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.7 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
In the 3,527 households lived statistically 2.35 per person.
20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 18.9 percent were 65 years or older. 49.2 percent of the population was female.
