Newton County (Indiana)

The Newton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. In 2010, the County had 14,244 inhabitants and a population density of 13.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Kentland.

The Newton County is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Indiana in the south suburban area of Chicago and on the west by Illinois. It has an area of 1045 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface.

The northern border of the county is formed by the Kankakee River, one of the two sources of the Illinois River. In the south of the county is drained by the Iroquois River, which flows north-east further into the Kankakee River.

History

The Newton County was formed on February 7, 1835 as original county of free territory. It was named for John Newton, a sergeant in the American War of Independence.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Newton County 14,244 people in 5370 households. The population density was 13.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 5370 households lived statistically 2.63 per person.
