Newton Nash Clements

Newton Nash Clements ( born December 23, 1837 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, † February 20, 1900 ) was an American politician (Democratic Party).

Career

Newton Nash Clements graduated in 1858 from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Then he went in 1859 at Harvard University. He studied law, but he never practiced. During the American Civil War he served in the Confederate Army. He served as Captain in the 26th Alabama Regiment first and later in the 50th Alabama Regiment. This was followed by promotion to Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and finally to the Colonel.

Clements was 1870-1872 and 1874-1878 member of the House of Representatives from Alabama. During this time he had in 1876, 1877 and 1878 held the post of speaker. He was then elected to the 46th Congress, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Burwell B. Lewis. In his bid for a nomination for the 47th U.S. Congress, he suffered a defeat. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives on 8 December 1880 to March 3, 1881. He also went to agricultural activities, which included the production of cotton. He died 1900 in Tuscaloosa and was buried there in the Evergreen Cemetery.
