Newton Steers

Newton Ivan Steers, Jr. ( born January 13, 1917 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, † February 11, 1993 in Bethesda, Maryland ) was an American politician. Between 1977 and 1979 he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Newton Steers attended the public schools in White Plains (New York) and thereafter until 1935, the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville (Connecticut). This was followed up in 1939 to study at Yale University. By 1943, he studied meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Thereafter, he served during the Second World War and then until 1946 in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war Steers studied under law. After qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. From 1951 to 1953 he was employed by the United States Atomic Energy Commission. From 1953 to 1965 he led several investment firms in New York State. Between 1967 and 1970 he served as Insurance Commissioner of the State of Maryland.

Politically, Steers joined the Republican Party. In 1962, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress yet. From 1964 to 1966 Steers chairman of the Republican was in Maryland; 1971 to 1977 he was a member of the State Senate. In the years 1964 and 1984 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. In the congressional elections of 1976 was Steers in the eighth constituency of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Gilbert Gude on January 3, 1977. Since he has not been confirmed in 1978, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1979.

1980 Newton Steers applied unsuccessfully to make his return to the Congress. Two years later failed as a candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. He died on February 11, 1993 in Bethesda.
