Newton W. Gilbert

Newton Whiting Gilbert ( born May 24, 1862 in Worthington, Franklin County, Ohio; † July 5, 1939 in Santa Ana, California ) was an American politician and governor general of the Philippines.

Studies and climb to the Congressman

After studying law at the Ohio State University, he worked from 1885 as a lawyer in Angola ( Indiana). From 1888 to 1896, he was appointed and later elected measurement inspector in Steuben County. In 1896, he was first a member of the Senate of Indiana, and then from 1901 to 1905 vice-governor of this state. During the Spanish- American War was Gilbert Captain and Chief of H Company of the 157th Infantry Regiment of the Volunteer Army.

March 4, 1905, he represented the Republican Party in the constituency of Fort Wayne as a member of the House of Representatives in the 59th Congress of the United States.

Ascent to the governor general of the Philippines

However, early on November 6, 1906 Gilbert resigned his parliamentary seat and was judge of the court of first instance of Manila. Two years later he was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt as a member of the Philippine Commission. As such, he was from 1908 to 1909 President of the Administration of the University of the Philippines, and for a short time in 1909 Gouvernementssekretär for public contracts. 1909-1913 he served as Deputy Governor of the Philippines.

Gilbert was from 1 September to 6 October 1913 as the successor to William Cameron Forbes Acting Governor General of the Philippines until the assumption of office by Francis Burton Harrison. After his return from the Philippines, he was a lawyer in New York. In addition, he was a delegate to the 1916 Republican National Convention in the year.
