Newtown is a place in Hamilton County in the U.S. state of Ohio, about 20 km east of downtown Cincinnati. The place is situated on the south bank of the Little Miami River. Newtown has about 2,400 inhabitants (as of 2000 census ) - ie less than half of the herein required for the declaration to the city 5000, and is therefore regarded as "Village".

History

The town was first settled under the name of Mercer 's station in 1792 by whites, including Captain Aaron Mercer, after the settlement was named. 1801 place of General James Taylor ( 1769-1848 ) was divided into lots and officially established. The growth of the place was initially driven by a gravel pit and a brickyard. Many of the early houses were built of the locally made bricks, which is rather unusual for this period of construction.

In the area around Newtown are a number of prehistoric archaeological monuments, two of which were listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the " Odd Fellows ' Cemetery Mound " is a grave mound from the Adena culture, which was first described in 1881. The " Hahn Field Archeological District " contains finds from the Fort Ancient and the Late Woodland culture.

Personalities

  • John Lambert Richmond (1787-1845), Baptist minister and physician, introduced in 1827 published the first Caesarean section in North America, co-founder of the medical faculties at the Denison University (Ohio ) and at Franklin College ( Indiana).
  • Judson Harmon (1846-1927), lawyer and politician, was United States Attorney General and then Governor of Ohio.
  • Erich Maren Schlaikjer (1905-1972), geologist and paleontologist, employees of Barnum Brown.
