Nexus (ensemble)

Nexus is a Canadian percussion ensemble, which is situated in the field of new music, but at the same time is open to jazz and world music. The group was able to win hundreds of percussion instruments, the most important musical traditions and cultures an international reputation due to their mastery. The members have also invented their own tools that meet special musical needs.

The ensemble consists of Bob Becker (mainly on the marimba ), Bill Cahn (mostly xylophone), Robin Engelman, Russell Hart Berger and Garry Kvistad. One of the founding members, Michael Craden died, 1982; another, John Wyre, was replaced by Garry Kvistad 2002. Engelman left the ensemble in late 2009 due to health reasons.

History

Nexus was founded in 1971 in Toronto; in his first concert it played improvised music exclusively. The musicians were involved in the recording of Steve Reich's Drumming and also on the soundtrack of the film The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1974); in the following year, the ensemble appeared in the Canadian documentary Musicanada. The group became internationally known after 1975 an album with the flutist Paul Horn presented - Paul Horn and Nexus. In 1976, Nexus ragtime music on mallet instruments. In 1982 a production with the Canadian poet Earle Birney.

Many composers such as Toru Takemitsu who also composed for the Ensemble as the members of Nexus 1985, the group itself to a production of Glen Hall was involved with Gil Evans; In 1995, she took Gavin Bryars for the recording of his album Farewell to Philosophy. She also has been involved in Tony Levin World Diary (1995). Furthermore, the group gives master classes.

The ensemble has presented to 2011 22 albums of his own. The Drum Talker album published in 2003 was nominated for a Juno Award. Nexus toured nearly every continent. To his anniversary tour 2011 concerts in Japan, the U.S. and Canada were sold out.
