NGC 45

NGC 45 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Cetus. NGC 45 has an apparent visual magnitude of 10.7 mag and an angular extent of 7.4 '× 5.1 '. The surface brightness of 14.8 mag/arcmin2 is one of the smallest among the known galaxies. From our sight of the surface NGC 45 is close to various galaxies of the Sculptor filament, which it was consequently attributed. However, the highly divergent compared to the other galaxies in this group relative speed rather indicates that NGC 45 is not part of the Sculptor group, but seen from the Earth is behind this.

Discovery

The galaxy NGC 45 was discovered on 11 November 1835 by the English astronomer John Frederick William Herschel.
