NGC 6357#Pismis 24

Pismis 24 is an open cluster in the emission nebula NGC 6357 in the constellation of Scorpio. Its name derives from the astronomer Paris Pismis, the 1959 recordings of the observatory Tonantzintla discovered the star cluster ( in Puebla). For he is young by astronomical standards.

Pismis 24 contains, among other things, the object Pismis 24-1, also HDE 319718A or LSS 4142A called ( spectral class: O3, Age: 5.86 million years, absolute magnitude: -11.8 ), which with a mass of 200 to 300 solar masses some time as the heaviest known star was. Recordings with the Hubble Space Telescope revealed, however, that this is a double star. It may even be a triple system. Despite this resolution into two single stars are the two O- stars with a mass of 70 to 100 solar masses for the heaviest known in the Milky Way stars.

Marked with Pismis 24-17, also known as HDE 319718B, heard another copy with about 100 solar masses for this very rare class of stars.
