Nguyá»…n Du

Nguyễn Du ( tự Hán :阮 攸; * 1765 in Bich Cau Thang Long, † 1820) was a Vietnamese poet and writer. He was born 1765 in Bich Cau Thang Long, in an old aristocratic scholar and mandarin family. His father, Nguyen Nghiem was prime minister at the court of Lê kings in Thang Long ( Hanoi ) and had eight wives and 21 children.

His most famous work is Truyen Kieu (传 翘, literally: The Story of Kieu; , original title: Đoàn Trường Tân Thanh ,断肠 新 声), the story of the beautiful girl that sells to save her father. It belongs with its 3254 verses in the verse Luc Bát until now regarded as classics of Vietnamese literature, is regarded as the national epic and is standard reading material at Vietnamese schools. It was, like, written many works of the 18th century in the font chu nom. It is based on the written in classical Chinese novel Chin Yun Ch'iao chuan (金 云 翘 传, Vietn. Vân Kim Kieu ) by Jen Tsai Ching Hsin (青 心 才 人, Vietn. Thanh Tâm Tài Nhân ).
