Niagara Falls [ naɪ ˌ ː lz æɡəɹəfɑ ] is an American city in Niagara County, the State of New York. It lies on the Niagara River across from the Canadian city of Niagara Falls in the province of Ontario. The city has 50 193 ( 2010 census ) inhabitants in an area of 43.5 km ².

Economy

The city is dominated by Niagara Falls, which attract hundreds of thousands of tourists to the city, but the Canadian sister city has better deals (shopping centers, etc ). The Niagara Falls International Airport nearby airport wants to be the birthplace of the first supersonic aircraft, as well as the first commercial helicopter. The energy gained in the Niagara Falls hydro-electric power plants (see List of largest hydroelectric power stations ), which in favorable and was available in large quantities and was used directly in the city, was formerly a great advantage for the industry and secured jobs in the city.

However, in the course of globalization and significantly increasing labor costs in the U.S., this advantage was gradually lost because the factories can be operated much cheaper in countries such as China. The recent global economic crisis has also hit the city particularly hard. The unemployment rate for the city was 10.9 percent (March 2011 ), well above the average for the State of New York, this amounted to 8.0 percent.

Demography

The city has struggled since 1960 with a decline in population, while the population of the State of New York and the United States has risen massively in total within this time. The consequences for the former city are correspondingly large and severe. A turnaround is in sight, and for the majority of the population of tourism remains the only hope for a turnaround. Otherwise, the city is threatening to degenerate within the next few decades to a small town.

Traffic

Niagara Falls has a railway station with trains operated by Amtrak to New York City as well as the jointly operated by VIA Rail Canada and Amtrak cross-border long-distance train The Maple Leaf to Toronto. This train crosses the border between the stations Niagara Falls (New York) and Niagara Falls (Ontario ) over the Whirlpool Bridge.
