Ngiou an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean, about 450 km northeast of Tahiti is located. Politically, it is part of French Polynesia, where the municipality of Fakarava.

Ngiou is an almost circular atoll with a diameter of about 8 km. The lagoon is completely enclosed by a single annular island. Within the community Fakarava thus it represents the second smallest Atoll

History

Ngiou was discovered for Europe in October, 1820 Baltic German Admiral Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. He named the island after the Russian Admiral Samuel Greig Greig. The only site and chief town is Tupuna in the Northeast. The island's name means in Polynesian as much as the coconut palm. The soil of the island is in contrast to most other atolls very fruitful. There are grown among other bananas, oranges and lemons.
