Attacks WikiLeaks [ niki vɛndola ] official first name: Nicola; Born August 26, 1958 in Bari ( Apulia ) is an Italian journalist, a trained philosopher and politician ( Sinistra Ecologia Libertà ) and President of the Puglia region.
Life
In 1972, Vendola in the youth wing of PCI, the secretariat of which he served from 1985 to 1988. In 1990 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Italy (PCI). In 1991 he participated in the founding of the PRC Comunista. As a member of Parliament Vendola worked at the Commission for the Control of the Mafia. He became known also by his involvement in the league against AIDS and the gay and lesbian cultural association ArciGAY. As a devout Catholic Vendola has long been associated with the Christian peace movement. His research focus continues to be one of commitment to improving the living conditions of the disabled, the mentally ill and prisoners.
In his home region of Puglia Vendola achieved at the 2004 European election a celebrated success, but then decided not to meet the mandate in the European Parliament, to devote himself to further the southern Italian politics. In January 2005 Vendola was nominated by a code (with unexpectedly high turnout of about 80,000 people) surprisingly top candidate of the Alliance of center-left parties in Puglia. This passed through the vote of the basis for the first time a Communist at the tip of a center-left alliance. From the regional election on 3/4 April 2005 went Vendola emerge victorious as the new president of Puglia. On 28-29. March 2010, he was confirmed in office.
