Nicholas County (Kentucky)

Nicholas County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Carlisle.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Kentucky, is located in the north about 45 km from the state of Ohio and has an area of 510 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Robertson County, Fleming County, Bath County, Bourbon County and Harrison County.

History

Nicholas County was formed on December 18, 1799 from portions of Bourbon County and Mason County. It was named for George Nicholas, an attorney general.

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,813 people in Nicholas County. Of these, 103 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 2,710 households and 1,951 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.3 percent white, 0.8 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.3 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.5 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,710 households out of which 31.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 28.0 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent of all households and 12.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.92.

Based on the county the population was spread from 23.6 percent population under 18 years, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 89.3 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the 29 886 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 35,491. Males had a median income of $ 26,960, women $ 21,102. The per capita income was $ 15,880. 9.7 percent of families and 13.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 14.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 16.8 percent of those 65 years.
