Nicholas I Zaya

Nicholas I Zaya (* Khosrova, Iran, † February 15, 1863 ) was a patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church.

Life

After several years of studies in Rome returned home, was Zaya ( Isaiah ) in 1836 by John Hormizd, since 1830 Catholic " Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans " based in Mosul, coadjutor with the right of succession of the aged Archbishop Melchizedek Mar Išo'yahb († August 23, 1859 ) was consecrated by Salama in Khosrova (north of Urmia in Iran ). By letter of 29 September 1838, the Roman Congregation of Propaganda appointed him coadjutor with right of succession of Patriarch John Hormizd, who was already deceased at this time († August 13, 1838 in Baghdad ). The purpose of this appointment, without the prior choice was the final renunciation of the hereditary principle of the occupation of the East Syrian Patriarch chair, from which even the Catholic become Hormizd had not completely solved. His successor took the name of Nicholas I, was ordained in 1839 and confirmed on April 27, 1840 by Rome. In the same year, he obtained a firman of the Sultan as a separate head of the Catholic Chaldeans in the Ottoman Empire.

With John Hormizd and Nicholas I competed not only the Catholicos - Patriarch Mar Shimun XIX. of Qudshanis (1820-1860; 1843-1847 residing in the British Consulate Mosul ), but also the Chaldean Catholic Patriarchate in Diyarbakir ( Amida ) in the form of Augustine Hindi ( † 1828), who called himself Patriarch Joseph V., and Joseph Audo (1790-1878), from 1822 Hindi Bishop in Mosul ( from 1830 nominally Amadiya ), which eventually should be Nicholas 's successor. On difficulties in our own ranks Nicholas I met also with the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1843 and the continuing demands of Beth d' Abuna family of former Erbpatriarchen of Alqosh. The European Orient missionaries on the other hand its tradition-based and self-conscious official guide was anything but praise. 1845 allegations were added for alleged waste of the church 's assets. To investigate Nicholas I was summoned to Rome, refused, however, and put them end 1846 Patriarch resigned. Successor as " Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans " in 1847 his old rival Joseph VI. Audo.

Nicholas Zaya retired to Khosrova and searched there his older succession rights to the bishopric of Salama against the reigning coadjutor and successor of Melchizedek Mar 1848 Išo'yahb, Giwargis Augustine Barshina (* 1814, † June 23, 1890 ), to enforce. He also called for continued respect for his patriarch. He opposed the Chaldean Catholic hierarchy and the active on-site French Vincentian Missionaries ( Vincentians ), whose intervention he forbade in the Eastern Church affairs is. Nicholas looked for and found on the other hand support on non-Catholic side, so that from a threat by him schism was mentioned. In his last year, he became reconciled with his mother church. The grave inscription in Khosrova calls him "Patriarch of the Chaldeans ."
