Nickelback (American Football)

Nickelback is a player position in American football.

As Nickelback a third cornerback is called, comes in certain Defense formations in addition to the usual four - defensive backfield players (two cornerbacks and two safeties ) on the field. These formations are taken when the opposing offense with a move has to run a long distance and therefore a Passspielzug is expected.

The term nickel is derived thereby derived from the fact that the player is the fifth defensive back on the field and in Canada or the U.S., the 5-cent piece is colloquially referred to as nickel.

The position of Nickelback is not a starter position because it does not occur in the basic defensive formations. Therefore, there are usually cornerbacks or safeties occupy this position.
