Nickel ( II ) carbonate is a chemical compound from the group of nickel compounds and carbonates which occurs in several hydrate forms.
Occurrence
Nickel (II ) carbonate occurs in nature as the mineral Hellyerit (hexahydrate ) and Zaratit, Nullaginit and Otwayit ( hydroxycarbonates ).
Production and representation
Nickel (II ) carbonate hydrates can be produced by electrolysis of saturated with carbon dioxide at nickel electrodes. Anhydrous nickel (II ) carbonate can be obtained by reaction of a sodium bicarbonate solution, acidified with hydrochloric acid to a nickel (II) - chloride solution at a high temperature and high pressure. There is also a yellow modification that occurs in the other pressure, temperature and concentration conditions. Nickel ( II ) carbonate is also formed by the decomposition of nickel carbonyl.
Properties
Nickel (II ) carbonate and its hydrates are light green odorless solids which decompose above 120 ° C in carbon dioxide and nickel ( II ) oxide at temperatures. Anhydrous nickel (II ) carbonate is insoluble in water and acids, but its hydrates are readily soluble in acids. It crystallizes with the rhombohedral space group R3c (a = 780.7 pm, a = 48 ° 40 '). Anhydrous nickel carbonate is difficult to produce. The the commercially available nickel carbonates are basic ( nickel hydroxycarbonate, nico3 · x Ni ( OH) 2 · x H2O, CAS: 12607-70-4, 12122-15-5 or 12244-51-8 ) and slightly soluble in water. They are formed by the precipitation of nickel salt solutions with sodium carbonate.
Use
Nickel ( II ) carbonate is used as a catalyst in the fat hardening and for the preparation of nickel (II ) oxide, ceramic inks (pigment ), and icings, as well as used in the electroplating.
Safety
Nickel (II ) carbonate is classified as many nickel compounds as carcinogenic and toxic for reproduction.
