Nickel ( II) iodide is a chemical compound of the elements nickel and iodine. The substance is a black crystalline solid which melts at 797 ° C.
Production and representation
Nickel ( II) iodide can be obtained directly from the elements:
Another way of illustration, the iodination of nickel ( II) chloride with sodium iodide:
Also possible is the preparation by reaction of nickel ( II ) hydroxide or nickel carbonate with hydriodic acid.
Properties
Nickel ( II) iodide crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system with the space group and the lattice parameters a = 392.9 pm and c = 1981.1 pm, in the unit cell contains three formula units. The structure thus corresponds to the CdCl2 structure.
Nickel ( II) iodide dissolves, like the other nickel halides except for nickel (II ) fluoride in water for blue-green hexahydrate:
Its crystals dissolve rapidly in air and are stained brown with Iodabscheidung. From 43 ° C, the compound decomposes. When heated in a water bath, it transforms into the anhydrous form.
