Nickey Iyambo

Nickey Iyambo ( born May 20, in 1936 Onayena, South West Africa, today Oshikoto Region, Namibia ) is a Namibian physician and politician ( SWAPO ).

Life

Nickey Iyambo was born in 1936 in what was then South West Africa Ovamboland. At the age of 26 years Iyambo was a member of the South West Africa People 's Organization (SWAPO ), and initiated during this time, including the local post office. In 1964, he went along with other political refugees into exile in Tanzania. The 70 years spent Iyambo at the University of Helsinki, Studies in Social and Political Sciences ( 1969-1974 ) and medicine ( 1974-1980 ). After graduating, he took a leading position in the medical SWAPO refugee camp Cuanza Sul, Angola.

Dr. Nickey Iyambo in 1989 a member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia and received in Nujoma's first government management of the health and social department. During this time he built up the national network of primary health care and a nationwide campaign for AIDS education. In 1996 he moved into the previously run by Libertina Amathila Department for Local and Regional Administration and housing, and in 2002 the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Iyambo applies within the party as one of the politically most treatable politician and was a long time member of the Central Committee of SWAPO. He was finally elected to the Politburo of the Party in 2002.

With the accession of Pohambas he took over in 2005 the management of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, and was by this time one of the oldest members of the Cabinet. Since 2008 he has directed the Department of Veterans Affairs. Iyambo is married, has two children and lives in Windhoek.
