Nico Dostal

Nico Dostal; actually Nikolaus Josef Michael Dostal ( born November 27, 1895 in Korneuburg, Lower Austria, † October 27th 1981 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian operetta and film composer.

Life

Nico Dostal devoted himself at first to the study of law at the University of Vienna, then studying music at the Academy of Sacred Music in Klosterneuburg turned to, however, and made off with his 1913 in Linz, premiered " Great Mass " in D major a name.

After his participation in the First World War Dostal worked from 1919 to 1924 as a theater conductor in Innsbruck, St. Pölten, Vienna, Czernowitz and Salzburg and went in 1924 to Berlin, where he turned to popular music, worked in music publishing and as a freelance arranger, among others, for Oskar Straus, Franz Lehár, Walter Kollo and Robert Stolz worked. In addition, Dostal worked as a conductor and composer, wrote the music for the film Kaiserwalzer and 1933 had great success with his first operetta Clivia, who followed in addition to some other The Beloved (1934 ), The Hungarian Wedding ( 1939) as well as numerous film scores. 1946 Dostal moved to Vienna and lived in Salzburg, where he was still dedicated to his work as a composer and about the chamber musical How to make career (1961 ) wrote since 1954. He was the nephew of the composer Hermann Dostal. Since 1942, he was married to the opera singer Lillie Claus. Their son Roman Dostal was a conductor.

Nico Dostal died in 1981 in Salzburg and was buried at the Salzburg municipal cemetery in a grave of honor.
