Nico Richter

Nico Richter ( born December 2, 1915 in Amsterdam, † August 16, 1945 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch composer.

Biography

Rise

Nico Max Richter was born the second of three children of the dentist Izaak judge in Amsterdam. As early as elementary school age, he received his first violin lessons at the age of twelve already impressed him the appearance of a living composer: " I want it too! ".

In September 1927, he came to the high school (HBS Hoogere Burger School) and in 1930 began his violin lessons with Sam Tromp, the parents worried reported that Nico sheer violin oblivious to the school. It also emerged first compositions, which he later described as a rather early works and not all could apply.

After leaving school in 1932 he enrolled ( at the insistence of his father ) in Amsterdam as a medical student one. He began violin studies at the same time the Sepha Jansen in the Conservatory. The first public performance of a composition was on 16 March 1935: the Violin Concerto of the 17- year-olds.

In July of 1935 he nam, took a master class with Hermann Scherchen in Belgium in part as conductor and received the Prix Henry Le Boeuf price for his Cello Concerto. Hermann Scherchen himself conducted the first performance at the Brussels Palais des Beaux Arts, and took the concert also to Winterthur. There, the famous cellist Emanuel fires husband played the solo part. Even in his hometown, a performance took place the following year. Beginning of 1940, emigrated his older sister just in time with her family in the U.S., while Nico Richter and his parents decide not to stay in Amsterdam. But in May, the Netherlands is invaded by the Germans, and the reprisals against the Jewish population in particular accept month to.

Yet in September 1940 married Nico Richter violinist Scheffer Hetta, who is not Jewish and with whom he is engaged since 1937. In early 1942, mixed marriages were already banned. On the night of 17th to April 18th, 1942 Nico Richter is arrested. From November 6 to January 18, 1943, he was interned in Amersfoort, then in camp Vught. Here are some months a prisoner orchestra in which he participates. On 15 November 1943 he comes via Westerbork to Auschwitz. On October 16, 1944, the three-day transport follows to Dachau, where he comes to a subcamp at Buy ring. After the liberation on 27 April 1945 by the Americans Nico Richter arrives in Eindhoven in July 1945. His wife Hetta can bring their terminally ill man with an ambulance to Amsterdam. In the few weeks that remain to him, he dictated two sets of Serenade, which he composed in the camp in memory. He died on August 16, 1945 four months before his thirtieth birthday.
