Nicodemus Tessin the Younger

Count Nicodemus Tessin the Younger ( * May 23, 1654 in Stockholm, † April 10, 1728 ibid ) was one of the chief architects of Sweden in 1700 He was the son of the Swedish court architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. . Nicodemus Tessin the Younger was court architect from 1676, Stockholm City Architect from 1682 to 1715 and a royal council from 1712. His son, Count Carl Gustaf Tessin was one of the most influential Swedish politicians of his time.

Biography

After an initial training by the father Nicodemus began the Younger architecture studies in Rome ( 1673-78 ) as a student Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Subsequently, he traveled through Europe, where he was in France influenced by the garden architecture, especially by André Le Nôtre.

After the death of his father he took over in 1681 the work on the Drottningholm Palace, devoted himself to the Castle Church and the French Park. Other projects of his father, which he realized were the King Karls Church in Kungsör and the Holy Trinity Church in Karlskrona. For his wife and himself he built a city palace in Stockholm, the TESSIN PALACE. In the castle in Uppland Steninge he realized the architectural integration of the garden in the palace complex in the sense of the Baroque by terraces, stairways, pavilions and others. The highlight of his career as an architect but is the construction of the Stockholm castle, which was built in 1697 in place of the burnt-out castle Tre Kronor.
