Nicola Salvi

Nicola Salvi ( born August 6 1697 in Rome, † February 8, 1751 ibid; Nicolò Salvi also ) was an Italian architect in. His main work is the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

Life

Salvi was inducted into the Academy of the Arcadia 1717. There he met Antonio Canevari, who became his mentor. As this 1728, set out as a builder of the King of Portugal to Lisbon, Salvi took over his workshop and his orders in Rome.

1732 Salvi took part in two architectural competitions that Pope Clement XII. auslobte. While the facade of the Lateran Basilica Alessandro Galilei was awarded the contract, Nicola Salvi received surprisingly the contract for the construction of the Trevi Fountain. He was a representative well as the end point of the Acqua Vergine, an ancient aqueduct built. One building contract that had already been adopted in 1640, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, but could not finish.

The Trevi Fountain was to Salvi's life's work, to which he was employed until his death. The construction was completed in 1762 by Giuseppe Panini, the case, however, strict adherence to the plans Salvi. Only the statue of Oceanus was carried out at the request of Pope Benedict XIV by Pietro Bracci pleasing.

Since 1744 Nicola Salvi was suffering from an ever- aggravated illness that prevented in increasingly in his work. Most recently, he was only worn in a litter, which he could not leave the site.

Nicola Salvi was a friend of Luigi Vanvitelli, who supported him in the execution of the Trevi Fountain.

Thanks to his acclaimed work at the Trevi Fountain Salvi could have more important jobs that he had to decline because of its progressive disease, however. So he decided not to build the palace of Caserta in favor Luigi Vanvitelli on the prestigious offer of King Charles of Naples.
