Nicolaas van Eyck

I Nicolaas van Eyck ( born February 9, 1617 in Antwerp, † 1679 ) was a Flemish portrait and genre painter.

Life

In the years 1632-1633 he was an apprentice of Theodor Rombouts. 1641/42 van Eyck must have already been master of the Guild of St. Luke, as he registered apprentices. In 1642 he married, from the marriage were born two sons, of which Nicolaas II van Eyck was also a painter.

1658 Nicolaas I was captain of the Antwerp civil guard. He painted genre scenes from the life of a soldier after the manner of Pieter Snayers. Besides the military subject he dealt but also with religious content.

His paintings are to be found in the Netherlands, northern Italy and Austria.
