Nicolae Grigorescu

Nicolae Ion Grigorescu ( born May 15, 1838 in Pitaru in Bucharest, † July 21, 1907 in Campina ) was a Romanian painter and representatives of Impressionism.

Life

Grigorescu was very early (1848-1850) student of originating from the Banat Czech painter Anton Chladek ( 1794-1882 ). This worked in Wallachia, where he painted church frescoes and Bojarenporträts. So also began initially in order to Grigorescu, churches to paint ( Băicoi, Agapia, Zamfira, Caldarusani ).

In 1861 he received through the mediation of Mihail Kogălniceanu a scholarship in Paris. Here he attended among others the studio of Sebastien Cornu, where his classmates Pierre- Auguste Renoir was. But soon he was attracted by the Barbizon school, left the studio and went to Barbizon, where he devoted himself to the plein air painting and came into contact with the nascent Impressionism. In the years 1873/1874 he traveled to Italy (Rome, Naples, Pompei ), Greece and Austria (Vienna).

Grigorescu is considered the founder of modern Romanian school. As a painter, he characterized the rural life in the Great Wallachia ( Muntenia ).
