Nicolae Herlea

Nicolae Herlea (actually Nicolae Herle, born August 28, 1927 in Bucharest, † February 24, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Romanian opera singer with the voice baritone. Successes came at national and international opera stages, especially in the Italian repertory, especially in the role of Figaro by Gioachino Rossini, he sang during his career, more than 550 times.

Biography

He studied at the Conservatory in Bucharest in Aurelius Costescu - Duca, and later at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Giorgio Favaretto.

In 1951 he won first prizes in international singing competitions in Geneva, Prague and Brussels. His stage debut he started the same year as Silvio in Pagliacci at Opera Naţională Bucureşti, where he was engaged until his retirement in 1986 as a soloist. In 1958, he appeared abroad in appearance, especially at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. There were also guest appearances at London's Royal Opera House (1961 ), La Scala in Milan (1963) and the Metropolitan Opera in New York ( 1964-1967 ), the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, ​​the Berlin State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, La Monnaie in Brussels and in the opera houses of Prague and Budapest.

In addition, studio recordings from The Barber of Seville, Lucia di Lammermoor, Rigoletto, La Traviata, La forza del destino, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Tosca published by Herlea, on labels like Supraphon, Intercord Germany, Electrecord and he won more national and international prices. Since his retirement he has given master classes at the University of Music Bucharest, and was president of the jury of the Hariclea Darclée, an international singing competition in Brăila. He was honored as an artist of the people and was awarded the Star of Romania. On February 24, 2014 Herlea died surrounded by his family in Frankfurt am Main.
