Nicolae Timofti

Nicolae Timofti (born 22 December 1948 in Ciutuleşti, SSR Moldova, USSR ) is a Moldovan lawyer and politician. Timofti was elected on 16 March 2012 as the President of the Republic of Moldova.

Life

Nicolae Timofti, son of a family of Siberian deportees studied until 1972 Law at the University of Chisinau and subsequently worked as a consultant in the Ministry of Justice. He has served as a judge of the Supreme Council in 1976 as a district judge in Chisinau and from 1980.

After the declaration of independence of Moldova in 1990 Timofti was vice chairman of the Supreme Court and served as chief of the college for criminal offenses. In the years 1996 to 2001 he worked as Chairman of the Appeals Chamber of Chisinau, but was released shortly after the takeover by the Communist Party ( PCRM ) without giving reasons. 1996 Timofti was also Chairman of the Moldovan Association of Judges.

On March 16, 2012 Timofti won the election for President of Moldova. He is the first non-partisan head of state of his country. Timofti is regarded as pro-European set. Its success is seen as a possible turning point towards a western orientation of the former Soviet Republic. Previously, vetoed the communist opposition two and a half years, the election of a candidate. Timofti received by 62 votes to one vote more than the constitutionally provided three-fifths majority in parliament.

Timofti is married and father of three sons.
