Nicolas Bernier

Nicolas Bernier ( born June 28, 1664 in Mantes -la -Jolie, † September 5, 1734 ) was a French composer, harpsichordist and musicologist.

Bernier received his first musical training at the cathedral of his native town and of Évreux. He then studied in Rome by Antonio Caldara. In 1692 he settled in Paris. If you apply for the post of Kapellmeister of the cathedral of Rouen he was defeated Jean -François Lalouette, the student and secretary of Lully.

From 1694 to 1698 he directed the choir of the Cathedral of Chartres, afterwards the Saint -Germain l'Auxerrois in Paris. In 1700, he led in Fontainebleau before the king with great success on his Te Deum, which was played in the following years at various churches in Paris.

In 1705 he was followed by Marc- Antoine Charpentier claimed as musical director at the Sainte -Chapelle of Paris; He held this position until 1726. Since 1723 he was one of four musical director of the " Chapelle royale " next to Michel -Richard Delalande, Charles- Hubert Gervais and André Campra.

Bernier issued several volumes of motets and sacred and secular cantatas. The cantatas published in a new edition in the series The Eighteenth - Century French Cantata (New York, 1990).
