Nicolas Hotman

Nicolas Hotman (* 1610, † in April 1663 ) was a French composer, lutenist and viol player of Belgian origin.

Life

Nicolas Hotman was probably born in Brussels and comes from a family of violin makers from Antwerp and a family of iron -founders of Dinant. After his father's death in 1620, he moved with his mother Jeanne de Saint -Hubert Paris. Hotmann was probably taught by André Maugars. In 1629 he married Anne Paris, the daughter of a city clerk, who showed little interest in music, which is why he also turned to stock markets and real estate businesses.

Nevertheless, it is already mentioned in 1636 Marin Mersenne as one of the best viola da gamba player and Theorbenspieler his time. As successor to Louis Couperin, he was appointed in 1661 with Sébastien Le Camus to Ordinaire de la Musique de Chambre du Roi. He died just three years later.

Hotman founded the French viol school. He was probably the teacher of Monsieur Demachy and Monsieur de Sainte -Colombe and influenced major French gamba virtuoso Marin Marais as Louis de Caix d' Hervelois and Antoine Forquerays. His compositions for the viola da gamba and theorbo are most technically difficult and found in relation to its reputation only limited distribution. However, they illustrate that Hotman must have been a virtuoso instrumentalist.
