Nicolas-Jacques Conté

Nicolas- Jacques Conté (* August 4, 1755 in Saint- Céneri -près- Sées, today Aunou -sur -Orne (Normandy), † December 6, 1805 in Paris) was a French chemist, painter and inventor.

Conté is considered a co-inventor of the modern pencil, which he patented in 1795. This pencil the places named after him Conté. Furthermore he made in 1792 the proposal to make use of the observation of the enemy of the tethered balloon, which he did in the war against the Austrians and against the Prince of Coburg.

Then Conté received the Executive of the aerostatic Institute and the rank of Brigade Chief of the aeronaut in the army. He is also the inventor of a hydraulic press and made Napoleon on the Egyptian expedition through the establishment of workshops for the Army needs in Cairo essential services.

When his wife died in 1804 at the height of his fame, the loss ends his inventiveness. " No longer am filled with the desire to please her. "
