Nicolás Massú

Nicolás Alejandro Massú Fried ( born October 10, 1979 in Viña del Mar) is a former Chilean tennis player.

Massús mother Sonia Friedman is Jewish, his father Manuel Massú has Arab ancestors. Massús enthusiasm for sports was awakened by his grandfather Ladislao Fried, as Massú was five years old.

Career

1997 Massú was one of the best young players in the world. He won the Orange Bowl, the junior tournament at Wimbledon and the junior tournament at the U.S. Open. Also in 1997, Massú joined the professional tennis.

2000 Massú qualified for the Olympic Games in Sydney and led the Chilean Olympic team during the opening ceremony as flag bearer at. But the tennis tournament he was eliminated in the second round. In 2003 and 2004 he won the World Team Cup with his friend Fernando González.

His greatest successes he achieved at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In doubles, he won with his partner Fernando González, the first Olympic gold for Chile at all. In a tight five- set match they defeated the German Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schuettler. A day later crowned Massú his part in the Olympics with victory in singles. In the final he defeated the Americans Mardy Fish in five sets 6:3, 3:6, 2:6, 6:3 and 6:4. In the following years, he lost the connection to the tip and often stood in the shadow of his compatriot Fernando González, who was much more successful in time. In addition to the modest achievements in the singles, ran many Davis Cup clash with moderate success, which always ended with an early exit in Chile.

Massú fell in the rankings back far, making it difficult to participate in major tournaments. On 28 July 2008, he participated in the preparation for the Olympic Games in Beijing in a Challengerturnier in Belo Horizonte part and reached the final. In Beijing, he was set to defend his title and surprised many when he was 6-4, 7-5 defeat to favorite Belgian Steve Darcis in the first round. In the second round he was beaten with 6:70 and 1:6 Argentina's David Nalbandian.

On August 27, 2013 Massú announced his retirement from professional tennis. His best position in the ATP world ranking was No. 9, which he reached shortly after his Olympic victory.
