Nicolas Mignard

Nicolas Mignard ( baptized on February 7, 1606 in Troyes, † May 20, 1668 in Paris) was a French Baroque painter and engraver. He was the older brother of Pierre Mignard.

Life and work

Nicolas Mignard was born in Troyes in Champagne, learned there with an unknown master the craft of painting and studied the works of the school of Fontainebleau. In 1635 he accompanied the archbishop of Lyon to Rome and stayed there for two years. During this time, he copied works by Annibale Carracci and Francesco Albani, and verfertigte numerous etchings. On his return to France, he settled in Avignon down, married and worked as an altar painter. 1660 appointed him Mazarin to Paris, where he embellished some rooms on behalf of Louis XIV on the ground floor of the Palais des Tuileries. In 1663 he was admitted to the Royal Academy and served as rector there eventually. He was strongly influenced by Nicolas Poussin long stood in the shadow of his brother Pierre, but is now estimated more again.

He issued numerous portraits are narrated by contemporaries, including Simon Vouet, Jean -Baptiste Lully and Molière.
