Nicolas Sanson

Nicolas Sanson, the Elder, also: Nicolas Sanson d' Abbeville (* December 20, 1600 in Abbeville, France, † July 7, 1667 in Paris) was a French cartographer. He is considered the father of geography in France.

Life

His ancestors came from Scotland. In the years 1618-1667 Sanson created about 300 individual maps and atlases and illustrated texts. He became the Geographe Ordinaire du Roy (Royal mapmakers ) appointed and taught the kings Louis XIII. and Louis XIV in geography.

After his death, his sons Nicolas Sanson led (1626-1648), Adrien Sanson († 1708) and Guillaume Sanson († 1703) together with his nephew Pierre Duval ( 1619-1683 ), the grandson of Pierre Moulard Sanson († 1730) and Hubert Jaillot and Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) continued the work.
