Nicolas Schmit

Nicolas Schmit ( born December 10, 1953 in Differdange ) is a Luxembourgian politician and diplomat.

Nicolas Schmit began his professional career in 1978 at the University of Aix -Marseille III as a Research Fellow for International Economic Relations. From 1979 to 1983 he was in charge of the presidency of the Luxembourg government for economic affairs. From 1983 to 1989 he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg, among others, as personal assistant to the then Foreign Minister Jacques Poos. From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Counsellor at the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the European Union in Brussels. From 1992 to 1998 he again worked in the Foreign Ministry as head of International Economic Relations and Development Cooperation. From 1998 to 2004 he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the European Union in Brussels.

He is a member of the Luxembourg Social Democrats ( LSAP ). From 1989 to 1990 he was secretary of the party faction. In 1991 he became a member of the State Council and led this office until 2004. In 2004 he was appointed to the government Juncker Asselborn I. He was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration. In 2009 he took over the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Immigration. Since 2013 he is Minister for Labour and Employment and social and solidarity economy in the government begging cutter.
