Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Warsaw

The Nicholas Copernicus Monument (Polish Pomnik Mikołaja Copernicus ) in Warsaw was created by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen at the initiative of Stanisław Staszic bronze in 1822 and on 11 May 1830 by Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz before Staszic Palace, the present-day headquarters of the Polish Academy of Sciences, reveals Przedmieście at the Krakowskie.

During the German occupation in the Second World War the monument with German inscriptions were provided, which were removed on 11 February 1942 by the members of the Boy Scouts underground organization Szare Szeregi.

After the Warsaw Uprising, the monument was torn down in October 1944 by the German occupiers and brought for smelting in the area of Neisse in Upper Silesia. As this is no longer happening, the monument was built after the war on July 22, 1945 at the original place again.

Copies of this monument are also in Montreal and Chicago.
