Nicolaus Delius

Nikolaus Delius ( born September 19, 1813 in Bremen, † November 18, 1888 in Bonn ) was a German Anglist and Shakespeare scholar.

Biography

Delius went to Bremen to school. He studied for his matriculation examination philosophy, history, Greek literature and Sanskrit at the University of Bonn and the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Berlin. Delius graduated in 1838 with his doctorate in Bonn from ( dissertation: Radices pracriticae ) and taught in Berlin. 1844/1845 he wrote in Bremen, among other things for the new Weser -Zeitung. A year later, he decided to work in Bonn as Privatdozent. There began his interest in the works of William Shakespeare.

Delius was known for his edition of Shakespeare, which he published in 1854-1860. This gave him the 1855 had a dual professorship in French and English, until 1880 a professor of English, the first in Germany at all. Delius was co-founder and long -time chairman of the German Shakespeare Society and authored a variety of articles, essays and translations on this topic. His valuable Shakespeare collection he bequeathed to the Bremen Public Library.

Since 1837 he was Corp. loop carrier of Guestphalia Bonn.

Delius rests on the Waller Cemetery in Bremen in the family grave Schuessler Delius - Gruner ( grave number J 137).
