Nicole (Lot-et-Garonne)

Nicole is a small municipality with 276 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in France, in the department of Lot- et- Garonne in the Aquitaine region.

Geography

Nicole is on the right bank of the river Garonne, about one kilometer below the confluence of the Lot. During the breach of the Lot by the last foothills of the Massif Central, a viewing platform has been formed, the Peche de Berre, extends to the edge of the place today.

Since the mouth portion of the Lot with ships is closed, branches at Aiguillon a small channel (Le Canalet ) leading the ships to Nicole, where they can descend via a lock to the Garonne. If you drive on the Garonne about five kilometers upstream, you can leave where the Baise opens it in the lock of Saint- Léger. History

• The location at Pech de Berre was inhabited in ancient times. A Bronze Age settlement was discovered there, and Gallic and Roman colonization. From the early Middle Ages remains of fortifications are present.
• 1291 joined Bertrand Raymond de Campagne on behalf of Edward I ( king of England) Pareage a contract with Gaillard de la Roque, Abbot of Clairac to build a Bastide in the field of Nicole. There are no documents about the exact location, as well as the exact year of construction is unclear. It is well established that the Bastide was built on the hill Pech de Berre, and that it was abandoned in the mid- 17th century again.
• The current church was built around 1750, rectangular in a neo- Romanesque style. At that time it was practically built outside the village. Even in 1883 there were only about ten houses in his neighborhood. Later, the place became closer to the river bank.
• 1887 18 -meter-high cross was on Peche de Berre built and consecrated by the Bishop of Agen on Easter Monday. It was at that time the largest cruise in France.
