Geography

Geographical Location

The municipality is situated on the left bank about five kilometers southeast of the mouth of the Isar and Danube, at the foot of the Bavarian Forest.

History

The place was built over time from the Benedictine monastery Niederaltaich, which was founded in 731 or 741 by Duke Odilo of Bavaria. The monks came from the monastery island of Reichenau in Lake Constance. They chose an uninhabited area in the estuary of the River Isar, and built on a hill, the monastery, which was dedicated to Saint Mauritius. Abt Eberswind was the first abbot of this place Altaha (meaning " Backwater " ) called. In 788, after the fall of the Abbey Agilolfinger Altaich was raised by Charlemagne imperial monastery. The monastery was the beginning of the 10th century repeatedly destroyed by invasions of Hungary and the Czech Republic. Also in this century, the monastery became the canons and monks were from the canons, who were responsible for the ducal grave lay the Luitpoldinger. After the time of the Hungarian invasions from 990 there was another Benedictine in the monastery and the Holy Gotthard was abbot of the monastery. He led both Altaich and the monasteries Hersfeld Abbey and Tegernsee monastery by his Benedictine reforms to new heights. In these monasteries he held partly at the same time the office of abbot.

The place Alteich to have had 60 houses in 1226. The monastery was in the middle of the 13th century, the lower jurisdiction over the place, which exercised the monastery until its abolition in 1803.

In 1918 the monastery of Metten was reoccupied. The abbey church was in 1932 the papal basilica minor honorary title.

In 2013 Niederaltaich was hit by the floods, which affected many places in Central Europe in May and June. The peak level was measured at 8.15 m, to June 4, over 1800 residents were evacuated. At noon of the day a dam broke at wineries, characterized large parts of the village were till evening flooded.

For the first Mayor Albin Dietrich (UWG ) was elected with 63.27 % on 16 March 2014. His competitors Johann Kapfenberg (CSU ) received 36.73 %.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms description reads: In gold over green Dreienberg a blue wave beams, also diagonally crossed a red Abtstab and a red bill hooks.

In the arms of the close connection with the monastery Niederaltaich is expressed. The three mountain comes from the coat of arms of the monastery. This is further illustrated by the Abtsstab. The machete was used to cut the reeds on the Danube. The wavy line represents the Danube, lies on the Niederaltaich.

Climate Alliance

Niederaltaich joined with the local council decision of 7 December 2004 the International Climate Alliance and has thus set a sign of the will to sustainability in local politics.
