Niedermuhlern is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Niedermuhlern is located on 829 m above sea level. M., 10 km south of the capital of the canton of Bern ( straight line ). The village extends to the height of the Längenberg west of Gürbetal, in a hollow in the headwaters of Scherl Ibachs, at the northern foot of the Bütschelegg.

The area of ​​7.2 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the length of the mountain. The largest part of the area was during the high stage of the Ice Age, under the ice of the Aaregletschers. Therefore, the landscape shows rounded, polished by the glacier forms, different places, there are moraine deposits. The main part of the area is occupied by the saddle of Niedermuhlern, against the north to the back of Tann (880 m above sea level. M. ), rises towards the south to Bütschelegg whose north side is composed from forest wood rats. To the east the height of the Längenberg drops steeply against the Guerbetal out the eastern municipal boundary runs along the slope above Toffen to around 700 m above sea level. M.

To the west of the municipality floor extends into the valley of the Scherl Ibachs (right tributary of Sense). In the southwest of the municipality spell (ü. M. with 981 m the highest elevation of Niedermuhlern ) extends over the heights of Imihubels in a strong zertaltes area in the catchment area of ​​the Bütschelbachs. The landform in this terrain, short erosion valleys separated by narrow ridge (called harrows ) with steep slopes, are characteristic of areas that were not covered by the glacier during the Ice Age.   • Uecht (950 m above sea level. M. ) on a saddle between the catchment areas of the Scherl Ibachs and Bütschelbachs, east of Imihubels
  • Falebach (785 m above sea level. M. ) on the eastern slope of the Längenberg above Toffen

Neighboring communities of Niedermuhlern are forest (BE), Toffen, Rüeggisberg and Oberbalm.

Population

With 461 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Niedermuhlern one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Bern. Of the residents 99.6 % are German, 0.2% French-speaking and 0.2 % speak Spanish ( as of 2000). The population of Niedermuhlern amounted in 1850 to 831 residents in 1900 to 631 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased to 1980 it further decreased to 508 people. Since then, low population fluctuations were only recorded.

Economy

Niedermuhlern was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. The water power of the Scherl Ibachs was formerly used for the operation of a mill. Even today, the dairy and cattle breeding and agriculture have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available, including companies in the wood processing. On the Uecht the observatory is with Observatory of the University of Bern. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the agglomeration of Bern.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares on a link road of return flow over the length of the mountain to Riggisberg. Due to the post bus trips which operate on routes from Wabern after Niedermuhlern and Köniz to Riggisberg, Niedermuhlern is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1241 under the name Mulerrun. Later, the names Mulerron ( 1295), Nider Muleron ( 1389 ) published, Nidermulleren ( 1479 ) and Nidermuoleren (1577 ). The name Muhlern probably goes back to the word frankoprovenzalische molar ( rounded hill, Hill ).

Since the Middle Ages Niedermuhlern has undergone numerous changes of ownership. Under Bernese rule the village was assigned to the district court Seftigen. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ) Niedermuhlern belonged during the Helvetic Republic to the District Seftigen and from 1803 to Oberamt Seftigen, which was given the status of an office district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Ecclesiastically, the village was subordinated to 1699 the parish Belp, today it belongs to the parish room forest.

Attractions

The creek mill, a monumental splendor construction, was built in 1773. A closed townscape includes the hamlet Falebach. Here are imposing farmhouses in the Bernese style from the 18th century and an oven House of in 1764.
