Niels Nielsen (mathematician)

Niels Nielsen ( born December 2, 1865 in Ørslev on Funen, † September 16, 1931 in Copenhagen) was a Danish mathematician, mathematics historian and university professor. He dealt mainly with special functions, in particular the gamma function.

Life

Nielsen studied from 1885 at the University of Copenhagen, graduated in 1891 as Master scientiarum from and was there in 1895 and his doctorate ( Om s class bestemte integral above Nogle derved definerede semi- periodiske funktioner ). From 1887, he worked as a teacher in secondary schools next. In 1905 he was a university lecturer and in 1909 as the successor of Julius Petersen professor at the University of Copenhagen. From 1910 to 1917 he was president of the Danish Mathematical Society.

His 1904 and 1906 published monographs in German language manual of the theory of Cylinderfunktionen and handbook of the theory of the gamma function, summarizing his specialty and twenty years our own research, found widespread, as is the 1906 published monograph Theory of the integral logarithm and related transcendent.

Nielsen was in 1906 a member of the Leopoldina in Halle and in 1907 an honorary member of Wiskundig Genootschap in Amsterdam.
