Nieuw Nickerie - on the map of Suriname

Nieuw Nickerie - Paramaribo and Marienburg is the third largest city in Suriname. It lies on the border with Guyana at the mouth of the River Nickerie and has about 13,000 inhabitants. The majority of the inhabitants are descendants of immigrants from India ( the so-called Hindu mangosteens ) and Java ( the so-called Javanese ).

The city is the capital of the district of Nickerie. For the economic importance of the port of the city and is commonly the trade, especially cross-border trade with the neighboring country of Guyana.

History

Originally the place was on the right bank of the river and was known under the name of De Punt. After 1850, the heyday of the town began, but then under the name Nieuw Rotterdam. Due to the very strong coastal erosion, this place had to be abandoned in 1870 and further inland newly created as Nieuwe Wijk. Early as 1879, had to be evacuated and this settlement. She was then created on the left bank of the Nickerie and given its present name Nieuw Nickerie -. Today, a strong sea wall protects against further erosion.

Boundary location and boundary problems

The border crossing to Guyana is the only one of importance in Suriname. There is a ferry to nearby on the other side of the Nickerie River Spring Lands.
