Nigel Adkins

Nigel Howard Adkins ( born March 11, 1965 in Birkenhead ) is a retired English footballer and current coach.

Playing career

After spending the first three years of his career with the fourth division Tranmere Rovers, joined Adkins 1986 Wigan Athletic. With his new team, he missed the 1986/87 season in fourth narrowly promotion to the second division. In the following six years he played with Wigan in the third league, before the club in 1992/93 relegation last but one in the fourth league.

Coaching career

Bangor City (1993-1996)

After the descent with Wigan, he became player-coach for the Welsh club Bangor City and won the championship title directly in the League of Wales in 1993/94. After defending the title in 1994/95 Adkins finished with Bangor the 1995/96 season in fourth place.

Scunthorpe United (2006-2010)

On 6th November 2006 Adkins took over as coach on an interim basis for the English third division side Scunthorpe United, where he became the successor to Brian Laws. A month later he officially took over the position as head coach of the team from Scunthorpe. Adkins had worked for the club since 1996 as a physical therapist and fitness trainer. In his first season as coach led Adkins, also thanks to goals from Billy Sharp thirty, United to the championship in the Football League One 2006/07. However, the climbers spent only one year in the Football League Championship 2007/ 08, was last but one before the relegation to the third tier. After Scunthorpe only on the final day of the 2008/09 season reached the play-off collection, the team placed in the final 3-2 against FC Millwall and managed by direct promotion back to the second division. In the 2009/10 season top scorer Gary Hooper to United, (19 league goals ) as Twentieth relegation.

Southampton FC (2010-2013)

During the first half of the season 2010/11 Nigel Adkins changed on 12 September 2010 on the ambitious third division Southampton FC and led his new team in the Football League One 2010/11 as runners-up behind Brighton & Hove Albion in the second division. At the end of the season 2011/12 he went with his team to the Premier League.

On January 18, 2013 Adkins was released by Southampton FC.

Reading FC (2013-2016)

The danger of relegation English football club Reading FC has unveiled on Tuesday Nigel Adkins as their new coach. The laid-off from Southampton FC in January Coach got a contract until 2016.
