Nigerien Constituent Assembly election, 1958

Background

In the constitutional referendum on 28 September 1958, the voting age population of Niger took a majority stake in the Constitution of the Fifth French Republic and voted so to remain of the former colony in France within the French Community. A rejection of the Constitution would have meant immediate independence of Niger. Of the two in the Territorial Assembly, the Parliament of Niger, parties represented in the Nigerien Progressive Party (PPN - RDA) advocated a Yes and a No Sawaba. The Sawaba presented the parliamentary majority, and up to a nonparty all ministers in the Nigerien government, the Conseil de gouvernement. The positioning and defeat in the constitutional referendum caused the Sawaba a deep crisis, which manifested itself in numerous party outlets. The PPN - RDA, the rather had aroused the suspicions of the French administration tended since its inception in 1946, however, now found himself in the role of a trusted representative of French interests again. After the constitutional referendum, the Territorial Assembly was dissolved on 14 November 1958 to make way for new elections. The PPN - RDA officially took over as part of an electoral alliance with the programmatic name Union for the Franco- African Community ( UFCA ), which also belonged to pro-French Sawaba - apostates.

Results

Preliminary Results

The elections were held on 14 December 1958, and are considered to be the part of the French administration in favor of the PPN - RDA manipulated. From 1,320,174 registered voters went to the polls officially 483 953. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 36.7 %. Of the 483 953 votes ballots counted as valid 474 778 and 9175 as invalid (or blank ballots ).

Final result after the elections

Supposedly it was in the constituency of Zinder, the only ones with an election victory of Sawaba, irregularities occurred. The election results of this constituency were therefore canceled and scheduled 1959 elections in Zinder for June 27. Meanwhile, the UFCA was completely absorbed into the PPN - RDA.

Already on 18 December 1958, the Territorial Assembly decided to convert the existing overseas territory Niger in the Republic of Niger and the renaming of the Territorial Assembly in the Constituent Assembly. This happened under the new constitution of France, was constituted by the Niger as part of the Communauté française with its own constitution. The obviously rigged election results led to riots in the capital Niamey. In October 1959, the Sawaba was banned. Many of its leaders were arrested or went into exile. The 1958/1959 elected parliament acted as National Assembly of Niger in 1960 in the independence and was only elected in the parliamentary elections of 1965.
