Nigerien constitutional referendum, 1958

The constitutional referendum in Niger in 1958 was held on 28 September 1958. The electorate voted Niger majority for adoption of the Constitution of the Fifth French Republic, and thus to remain in Niger France within the French Community.

Background

The new constitution of France was also presented in the French overseas territories to vote. The referendum was also a de facto independence referendum: A rejection meant the immediate independence from France, a consent an extended autonomy of the territory. In Niger, the ruling party Sawaba campaigned for a 'no', while the distributors in the opposition Nigerien Progressive Party advocated a yes.

Result

From 1320174 493 953 registered voters went to the polls. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 37.4 %. Of the ballots cast were 474 778 as valid and 19.175 counted as invalid.

The ballot will be manipulated by the French administration under Governor Don Jean Colombani.

Niger was Autonomous Republic. The anti-French election losers Sawaba was ousted from power. The pro-French Nigerien Progressive Party was constituted as a unity party led and Niger in Africa 1960 to independence.
